Maui authorities Wednesday charged a
46-year-old police officer for allegedly slapping his 13-year-old daughter, who
fell and sustained a concussion.
Nelson Johnson was arrested
today and charged with abuse of a family and household member. His bail was set
at $1,000.
The 18-year Maui Police
Department veteran allegedly got into an argument with his daughter.
Police said the girl fell back
and hit her head 9:40 p.m. Tuesday on a wall-mounted air conditioning unit,
sustaining a concussion. She was taken to
the Maui Memorial Medical Center and later released in good condition.
Johnson was also arrested for
second-degree assault, but was not charged with that crime, although the case
is still being investigated, police said in a news release. Johnson is on
administrative leave, pending further investigation.
